Knowing Your Body Measurements

May 31, 2025

A gauge swatch is key—but knowing your own measurements is just as important when it comes to choosing the right size and creating a well-fitting garment.

We all know it can be a challenge to get that measuring tape out. For me, it takes a bit of convincing to actually look at how my measurements have changed over time. But—we won’t go there!

We often save our most prized yarn for that special sweater and can spend quite a bit of time working on it. Ideally, that sweater should fit well enough to feel truly comfortable. The shoulders should sit properly at the shoulder joints; otherwise, the sweater may pull the neckline open or, in the case of a cardigan, even slip off the shoulders. The armholes should allow for easy movement, but not be so deep that excess fabric bunches up at the underarms.

If the design includes positive ease, the bust area should have a relaxed fit without stretching the pullover. For cardigans, the button bands should gently overlap and lie flat when buttoned—no pulling or gaping.

Essentially, the entire upper torso—from the bust line upward—contains key fit points to pay attention to.

All of my garment patterns include a measurement chart (usually near the end), and I hope the accompanying diagram showing where to measure will help you compare your measurements to the pattern's size options.

With both accurate body measurements and a good gauge swatch, you’re fully armed—and ready to knit anything!
